Magnitsky Act Now
We collaborated with a coalition of groups and organisations from across the Asia-Pacific to have a full-page advertisement published in The Australian newspaper calling for the Australian Government to pass a #MagnitskyActNow.
The proposed Magnitsky Act introduces targeted sanctions against human rights abusers. It provides the power to impose visa sanctions and property-related sanctions on an individual who has committed serious human rights abuses or corruption. This would include sanctions on those responsible for Tibetan forced labour, religious repression, the denial of freedom of expression and freedom of movement for Tibetans, and many more issues.
Given that the government is yet to respond to the recommendations issued by the Senate’s Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Trade and Defence, the ad pushes for the Magnitsky Act legislation to be considered as a matter of urgency in light of the deteriorating human rights status across various locations in the world.
