66 Anniversary of Tibetan Uprising Day – 10 March 2025

10th March, 2025

On Monday 10th March, 2025, Tibetans across Australia gathered to commemorate the 66th anniversary of Tibetan Uprising Day. On 10th March in 1959, Tibetans in the capital city of Lhasa rose to oppose the invading Chinese Communist Party’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA). The uprising was met with extreme violence and thousands of unarmed Tibetan civilians were killed by the PLA. His Holiness the Dalai Lama was forced to flee into exile and since then he has not been able to return to Tibet.

ATC and Tibetan communities of Australia organised rallies in Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne to commemorate the brave Tibetan women and men who stood against oppression on 10th March, 1959 and those who continue to fight for freedom.

In Melbourne and the Blue Mountains the day was made even more significant as the Maribyrnong and Blue Mountains Councils both hoisted the Tibetan national flag.

ATC and Tibetan communities at the rallies on Monday called for the Australian Government to show greater commitment in protecting religious freedom in Tibet.

We want Australia to stand with like-minded countries by stating to only recognise a Dalai Lama appointed through Tibetan religious practices without interference by the Chinese Government.
